A field guide to AI positions

Graphics processing unit (GPU)

Publication dates and source age

Sources counted: 1

Publication dates are unavailable.

Assessed at this edition's evidence cutoff: 2026-09-15. 18-month boundary: 2025-03-15.

Some publication dates are unknown; the newest dated source may not be the newest source overall.

Publication age does not tell us whether a claim is still valid. Reading an old source again does not make its publication date newer. An update date does not establish that the passage we used was updated.

In plain language

A chip designed to do many calculations in parallel. It can accelerate suitable AI workloads, but it is not itself an AI model. [1]

Limits & distinctions

A CPU emphasizes fast sequences of operations; a GPU emphasizes many operations in parallel. Which is useful depends on the work, so a GPU is not automatically faster for every program. [1]

A fuller explanation

GPUs began as processors for graphics. Their parallel design is also used for calculations in model training and generation. A GPU runs software; the trained model’s numerical values are separate from the chip. [1]

How it relates to the map

Map context: a GPU is hardware. Owning or using one does not identify a movement or a position on AI risk. [1]
